XANAX - ANXIETY

Xanax – Summary:
Xanax is the brand name of the drug alprazolam, which is a triazolo 1,4-benzodiazepine analog. Xanax is one of the most widely prescribed drugs for the treatment of certain anxiety disorders. Xanax is found to be very effective in the treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorders, Anxieties associated with depression and panic disorders with or without agoraphobia. Xanax – Mechanism:
Xanax (alprazolam) belongs to the class of drugs called benzodiazepines that can bring chemical changes in the brain and the nerves to produce a calming and soothing effect of the mind. Xanax has high affinity to GABA, a natural chemical in the body. When Xanax is orally administered to the body, it calms anxiety and panic by enhancing the effect of GABA.

Xanax – Warnings:
Xanax is a drug for the short-term management of anxiety disorder. Xanax should not be used with other benzodiazepines, as it is hypersensitive to them. Xanax is contraindicated in infants, pregnant women and in people with diseases like myasthenia gravis and acute narrow angle glaucoma. The drug is not recommended for patients whose diagnosis is acute psychosis or depression. A person taking Xanax should be wary of the occupational hazards like driving and other activities that demands mental alertness and sound judgement. One should never mix Alcohol with Xanax, especially while driving, as the CNS depressant effect of the combination can be unpredictable. Studies have shown that Xanax and its metabolites are secreted through the milk. So, mothers nursing their babies should either stop taking Xanax or give up breast-feeding the baby.

Xanax – Precautions:
Xanax may be harmful, if taken under the wrong conditions. You would need to talk to your doctor, if you have medical conditions like:

  • Allergy to benzodiazepines
  • Liver diseases
  • Lung diseases
  • Kidney diseases
  • History of alcohol and substance abuse
  • Old and debilitated
  • Suicidal tendencies
  • Psychotic tendencies
  • Seizures and epilepsy

Xanax Dosage:
Xanax is an oral drug supplied in tablet forms of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2mg. The color of the pill may change according to the dose. The dosage of Xanax needs to be strictly monitored, as the long term use of this therapy may have drastic effects. Generally, Xanax is taken under the following dosages:

  • Adults start with an initial dose of 0.25 mg taken twice or thrice a day. The dose may be gradually increased or decreased according to the needs of the patient.
  • The elderly and the debilitated begin with a dose of 0.125 mg, twice or thrice a day. The dose may be gradually increased or decreased according to the tolerance and response of the patient.
In the case of a missed dose, skip it and move on to the next dose without doubling up on the dose. You would need to call up the emergency room of the nearest hospital, if you overdose on Xanax.

Xanax Storage:
• Xanax should be kept away from children and pets.
• Xanax should be stored away from light and moisture
• Xanax shouldn’t be kept in the bathroom
• Xanax should be stored at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F

Xanax Side Effects:
Xanax has reportedly many mild, moderate as well as adverse side effects, if it is taken under faulty conditions. The side effects that occur frequently are drowsiness, dizziness, hallucinations, irritability, lack of mental co-ordination, hostility etc. The other side effects of Xanax that rarely happen are:

  • Neuralgic:
    Hazy vision, headache, seizures, difficulty in depth perception, slurred speech

  • Genitourinary:
    Lack of continence, libido alteration

  • Gastrointestinal:
    Dry mouth, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, and vomiting.

  • Musculoskeletal:
    Muscle spasm and weakness.

  • Psychiatric:
    Perturbation, depression, mental confusion, euphoric, nervousness, and sleeplessness.

  • Cardiovascular:
    Hypotension, palpitations, tachycardia.

  • Hepatic:
    Heightening of alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, AST (SGOT), ALT (SGPT).

  • Hematological:
    Decrease of hemoglobin and hematocrit, disparity in WBC level.

  • Dermatological:
    Pruritus and rashes.

  • Miscellaneous:
    Incongruity of blood sugar levels
